Snippets of Story: May

QUICK NOTE: My computer has been acting up (I'm having multiple cord issues) so if I'm not on Blogger very much in the next few weeks that is the reason.  I'll do my best to keep up with emails and at least post once a week.

And now... Snippets of Story.  Snippets of Story is hosted by Katie at Whisperings of the Pen.  The link-up where you can join the fun is HERE.

I can't remember when the last time was I did Snippets....

Most of my main stories stopped talking in April and May ): so some of these snippets are a few months old.  But, just this week it feels like they are ready to talk again.  Yay!!!!

When he knocked on Elsheba's door, there was a scrambling sound inside and a few thumps before she called,
He opened the door.  Elsheba sat on her bed, her three Castle Cats on the floor in front of her.  Her ketri was on her shoulder.
Sojeph glanced at the bed and back to his sister, "Your Cats were on your bed again, weren't they?"
"They forgot the rule," her voice was innocent, but a guilty flush stole into her face.
"Then you should have reminded them," he told her, trying not to laugh.
The Land Beyond The Sunset

“When I grow up, I am going to be a knight and the best sword girl in Esidaraq and all of Quara,” Elsheba announced.
Jothadon snorted, “Girls don’t be knights, silly.”
“Ariana and Abijalla are knights,” Elsheba defended her choice.
“Yeah, but they are queens, not girls,” Jothadon insisted.
“They were girls, once upon a time,” Davardi informed him.
Jothadon wrinkled his nose.
The Land Beyond the Sunset

Betty Jo came down the stairs.  “What is wrong, Barbie?”
“Becky’s been in a car accident and is in the hospital.  You need to wake the kids and bring them in.  Brian and I are leaving right away.”
Betty went pale, “How bad?” she whispered.
Barbie swallowed, “I don’t know.”
Rocky Horseshoe Ranch

He cleared his throat and clapped his hands.  When everyone gave him their attention, he pointed to the corner where Maron, his brothers and cousins sat.
“It strikes me that in all this escorting you have been engaged in lately, you’ve not had time for practice.  You’re all going soft.”
"Going soft?” An indignant murmur ran around the circle.
“Ha!  You think.” Philippon muttered.
“I heard that.” Dardanus glared at him.  “And I’ll be the judge of your fighting readiness.  You will be standing before me in five minutes, dressed and armed for battle practice.”
The Three Kyngdoms

Elmer looked worried.  “I’m terribly sorry to be leaving right now, and dumping all the trouble on you.”
Ted shook his head, “Son, don’t you worry a lick.  I ain’t seen the wrongdoers yet that weren’t eventually caught by the just and righteous application of the law.”  He winked.  “You just put your mind to that pretty girl waiting for you in the East.”
Elmer managed a grin, thinking of his Laura, “Thank you sir.  Now that you’ve finished, I can take you down and show you the office and give you a tour of the town, if you like.”
Ride Ranger Ride
(working title- which will change at some point)

"Where have you two been?" Chryse asked in Cymry, so the young people from Cornoval could follow the conversation.
"We helped clean the stables this morning.  Then we had had breakfast and spent time with my younger brothers," Seren detailed.  "We were climbing trees with them."
"Just now we had business in the library," Philippon's eyes gleamed at Seren over his shoulder.
Chryse sighed.  "Does this 'business' mean you two will shortly be in trouble with Lord Zosimus again?"
"Why must everyone assume whenever we are in the library together we are planning a prank?" Seren demanded, aggrieved.
The Three Kyngdoms

"Let me look at you," Ixolta demanded.  She held him at arm's length and looked him up and down.  "You're as tall as I am now!  And you could use a haircut."
He shook his blond hair back, "I like my hair this way.  Morodd's is longer."
"And she's been trying to cut mine for months," Morodd winked.
The Three Kyngdoms

This month also gave me a new story that I'll devote a separate post to sometime.  I'll give you a teaser snippet here:

Sitara glanced coolly at him, “Did you ever wonder why we aren’t encouraged to form student groups without teacher leadership?  Why we are regularly moved around and roommates are shifted?  Why there is little emotional stability here?  Why everyone is led to believe they need no one and they are self sufficient?”
What Makes A Family? (working title)

Looking over these I realize I haven't said much about a few of these stories.  After my computer problems are fixed, I'll write up a post profiling all of the stories I haven't mentioned before and add them to my Storyland page at the top.

Happy writing to you all!!

One Year

Hello readers!!!

First of all, thank you all so much for your birthday wishes a few days ago.  It made my birthday that much more special.

Secondly, hello to my new followers!!!  Thank you for following!  Welcome to my blog and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Third: the title of today's post.

You see, it has been one year since I started blogging.  One year ago today, I posted for the first time.  In that year I have met so many wonderful people- people I now cannot imagine life without.  People who have become friends.  You've all blessed me so much and been a huge encouragement in my life, especially in my writing.

For today, I will share the story of how and why I decided to start blogging.

It began in February 2012.  Some of my younger sisters were considering starting a blog together (it fell through and they didn't do it) and they kept tell me I should start blogging, too.  At the time, I thought, "What on earth for????  What would I write about?   Who would read it?"

Fast forward to April 2012.  I had done a Scarlet Pimpernel related Google image search one day (I don't remember the exact search term) and one of the images that came up was from a blog called Of Trims and Frills and Furbelows.  Curious, I clicked through to it and started reading.  Five minutes in, I was thinking, "OH MY GOODNESS!!  There are other girls out there who are like me!!  Girls just as crazy about the Scarlet Pimernel and period dramas and writing."  From Alexandra's sidebar I also visited Amy's blog, Maria's blog and Anne-girl's blog.

In discovering the aforementioned blogs, I also discovered link-ups and challenges for young writers just like me.  I was on Cloud Nine.  I suddenly wanted to join in on all the fun.

And that is when I made my blog and spent a few weeks with my Mom helping me choose design elements and figure out the ins and outs of Blogger.  And on May 22, 2012 I published it.

It has been an awesome journey.  I've gotten into things I wouldn't have, like Les Miserables: The Musical, Doctor Who and KDramas; participated in some inspiring, challenging writing events; beta-read some amazing books, and most importantly, met some terrific people who I'm thrilled to call friends.

Looking back now, I am very happy I took the leap and did something I ordinarily wouldn't have.  It has been a wonderful adventure and I'm eagerly looking forward to this next year.

Thank you all for making it a memorable journey.

From the bottom of my heart,

Miss Melody Muffin

Childhood Memories Blog Party

The Story Girl

My friend Hayden at Story Girl is doing a Childhood Memories Blog Party. The party ends tomorrow but here are my answers to her tag.

First: name 5 childhood memories that bring a smile to your face
1. My dad teaching me how to fry eggs.
2. Feeding calves with friends who owned a dairy farm.
3. Riding our bicycles up and down the sidewalk for hours at a time with my younger sisters.
4. Playing Storm the Castle/Medieval Times/Bad Guy, Good Guy with one family of friends.
5. How excited my siblings and I were when our puppy came home after he had run away with our older dog.

Now: answer the questions
1. Was there a particular game that you played with your siblings all the time?
It was called 'Let's-see-what-new-adventures-we-can-make-up-today.'  Basically, anything my overly fertile brain could conceive, my siblings followed me into.

We did play House a lot, I guess; though I usually left the housekeeping to my younger sisters and went off exploring, scouting or 'hunting' with my brother.

We also loved playing pirates.  For several weeks, we even had our own elaborate pirate hideout complete with cannons and rifles for everyone.

2. Did you have a special toy/item that you dragged around everywhere you went?
I do recall taking my favorite doll (named after myself) several places.

3. What was a movie/ TV show that you were obsessed with as a child?
I loved watching Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.  I also remember being fond of Power Rangers.  But not really obsessed with, no.  At least, not that I remember.

4. Did you have an imaginary friend?
At least a dozen that I can think of right off the top of my head.  And MANY more that I can't think of right away.

5. What did you want to be when you grew up?
Many things!  Let's see... A queen, a horse racing jockey, a librarian, a lady knight, a horse trainer, a spy, a firefighter, a writer... and that's all I can remember at the moment.  I wasn't ambitious or anything, was I?  :)

6. Who was president when you were born?
George H. W. Bush

7. Any song associated with your childhood?
Several.  The one that springs to mind right now is How Firm A Foundation.

8. Something that scared you as a child?
Snakes.  The worst part about it, is that they still scare me.  *shudder*

9. What’s the food that you like now but back then just wouldn’t eat?
I don't mind sauerkraut now, but I hated it when I was little.  And guacamole.  I didn't like that either but I think it is delicious now.

10. Was there any Christmas or birthday gift that you really, really wanted and went crazy about?
Well, the doll I received for my fourth Christmas is the one that became my constant childhood companion.  The Breyer horses I was given for a few birthdays had me pretty excited, too.  And books never failed to excite me.  But not really anything that I can recall going completely nuts over.  My mother might remember better than I....

Tags: Part One

Whew!!  This week and next week, I'm going to be catching up.  Catching up on reading and commenting on other people's blogs, and answering all the great comments you lovely people left on my blog over the last few months.  Also, catching up on all my accumulated tags.  (I have a LOT to catch up on, yes?)

This is my first of at least four tags posts over the next couple weeks.  I'm terribly sorry I've let so many tags accumulate.  I really, truly do love being tagged and answering all the questions and then thinking up other questions and tagging people.

Back in October, Kiri Liz of Lianne Taimenlore tagged me with a Getting To Know You/ Just Because tag.

1. Answer the questions.
2. If you wouldn't mind mentioning my blog, The Golden Road, and the person who tagged you, that would be lovely.  This tag was created by Rose M. at The Golden Road, and I was tagged by Kiri Liz of Lianne Taimenlore.
3. Tag 5 to 10 people and let them know you tagged them.

The questions:
1. Coffee or Tea?
Tea.  Every time.  I like a cappuchino now and then but straight coffee- blech.

2. You win a thousand dollars!  What would be something fun that you do with it?
Buy almost every book and movie I really badly want?  Oooh, actually I'd go on a road trip to visit all my blogging friends.  :)

3. You're given the opportunity for a lead part in a play.  Would you take it?
Oh my stars, YES!!!

4. Would you rather sing, play an instrument or listen?
Probably listen, although I do love to sing, and someday I'll actually learn piano....

5. Are you more of a chit-chat person ?  Or sporty?
Well, much of the time I would rather sit and talk than run around.  But I do love a good game of kickball or badminton or Ultimate Frisbee.

6. Did you ever have an unrealistic dream as a child?  If so, what was it?
To become a horse racing jockey.  Seriously.  It lasted from the time I was 9 until I was about 13.

7. Have you fulfilled any of the dreams you had as a child?  If so, what were they?
Yes.  Having my own horse.

8. What's that one place in the world that you've always wanted to visit?
Just about everywhere?  Seriously, I yearn to travel all over the world.  At the very top of my list, though, are Italy and England.

9. What book character do you always find yourself imitating?
Um, what character don't I imitate?  It's that ingrained actress in me.  If I had to pick one though, probably Eowyn of Lord of the Rings.

10. What's your favorite season?  Why?
Spring.  For multiple reasons: it's the time of year when everything comes alive, there are lots of baby animals around, and my birthday is in May.

11. What are some of your favorite blogs to read?
There are too many to list here!  Check out my sidebar for the list.

12. How long have you been blogging?
Since May 22, 2012.

Questions for the tagees: (The same 12 questions I answered, which I have repeated here for your convenience.)
1. Coffee or Tea?
2. You win a thousand dollars!  What would be something fun that you do with it?
3. You're given the opportunity for the lead part in a play.  Would you take it?
4. Would you rather sing, play an instrument or listen?
5. Are you more of a chit-chat person?  Or sporty?
6. Did you ever have an unrealistic dream as a child?  If so, what was it?
7. Have you fulfilled any of the dreams you had as a child?  If so, what were they?
8. What's the one place in the world that you've always wanted to visit?
9. What book character do you always find yourself imitating?
10. What's your favorite season?  Why?
11. What are some of your favorite blogs to read?
12. How long have you been blogging?

I tag:
Mrs. Darcy
And a delightful family of girls I'm just getting to know in the blogging world:

Tag #2:
Jack had done a tag (back in October, I think) and then tagged anyone who wanted to answer and since her questions were so much fun, I elected to do the tag.  (And yes, it has been sitting in draft all these months.)  I'm just answering her questions, not tagging anyone else.

1. If you spent a week with Sherlock would you want to punch him by the end of it?
I might?  I'm not really sure.  :)

2. Is your name Rick?

3. Do you get what that was from, because I didn't for a long time?
Uhh, no I don't.

4. Have you ever turned your mum into a bear?
No.  Nor ever wanted to actually.

5. Have you ever sailed on the Jammy Dodger?
Don't I wish!!

6. When you met Hook did you ask to shake his hand?
Heehee, no.  What a missed opportunity!

7. Would you wear a fez?
No, I don't think so.  :)  Although it might come in handy as a disguise sometime.  It would be so out of character for me, no one would dream it was me.  (*eyes light up with new idea*)

8. You met a man named John Smith, what do you do?
Start shadowing him.  If he isn't the Doctor, then chances are he is still a suspicious character.

9. Are you a spy?
*mysterious voice* Oh yes.  Certainly.

10. Do you have to kill me now that I know?
No.  But I may have to abduct you and brainwash you into being on my team of highly trained, diplomatic spies.

11. Are you rude and not ginger?
I have been known to be rude on occasion, though I'm usually just sarcastic.  And most definitely not ginger.

Tag #3:
Also in October, Kiri tagged me with an elevensies tag.

- If you are tagged/nominated, you must post eleven facts about yourself.
- Then, you must answer the eleven questions the tagger has given you and make eleven questions for the people you are going to tag.
- Next, tag eleven more bloggers.
- Tell the people you tagged that you have tagged them.
- No tagging back.

Facts about myself:
1. It is a truth universally acknowledged that it is always harder to think of random facts about oneself when one is doing a tag, than at any other time.
2. I'm trying to grow my hair down to my hips.
3. Since it was just trimmed a couple weeks ago, it currently hangs to the middle of my back.
4. My favorite rodeo event to watch is team roping.
5. My horse thinks rabbits running around in their pen is a most curious site.
6. I love to climb trees.
7. Mozzarella cheese is my favorite cheese.  I credit my Italian heritage.
8. I was taught that if you cannot pronounce an ingredient on a food label, you should not be eating that food.  (I mostly follow that rule.)
9. I am known for rather odd cooking experiments, like putting cinnamon in farina.
10. Fresh mint leaves in water is wonderful on a hot summer afternoon.
11. I detest tucking in tails on knitted and crocheted projects.

Kiri's questions:
1. What is your third favorite color?

2. If you could rewrite any scene from any book, which one would it be and why?
In C.S. Lewis' The Final Battle I would have made Susan come back to Narnia.  Mostly because she is my favorite character, and though I understand allegorically (is that a word?) why Lewis did it, I don't like it one bit.

3. Would you rather live in a old palace, a cottage in the woods, a pirate ship, or a underground burrow?

An old palace, most definitely.  Though a pirate ship would be cool- for a while.  Until I couldn't handle the mess or the smells.

4. How do you pronounce the word "often?" Off-ten? Or Off-fen?

5. What is your favorite holiday film?
The Christmas Card.  Yeah, it's cheesy and corny and warm-fuzzy-feeling, but holiday movies are supposed to be like that!  A Princess For Christmas is a close runner-up.

6. If you had a book (any book including a cookbook or a research book) published, what would be featured on the cover?

A castle or a horse, probably.

7. Where would your dream home be located?

In Italy. Or England.

8. If there was no such thing as tea or coffee in this world, what hot drink(s) would you consume?

No tea??!  *Gasp!*  Hot Chocolate or cider.

9. What one song describes your life/day/mood?
My mood at the moment:
There's A Place For Us–Carrie Underwood

10. Peanut butter cookies, snickerdoodles, or gingerbread men?

Since I don't like peanut butter, nor am I particularly fond of snickerdodles; gingerbread men.

11. What is something you absolutely love right now?

My questions for my tagees:
1. Have you ever ridden in a tractor?  Or driven one?
2. Have you ridden a motorcycle?
3. What is your favorite national park?
4. Who is your favorite Contemporary Christian Music artist?
5. Mexican, Italian or Chinese food?
6. Favorite type of cookie?
7. Favorite fast food place to eat?
8. Do you have a green thumb?
9. Do you prefer to write or type in a chair or at a desk?
10. How many states have you visited?
11. What international capital city would you most like to see?

I tag:
John Boswell
Charity U
Miss Elizabeth
Rose M
The Mad Elvish Poet

And anyone I haven't tagged who would like to fill out these questions, feel free!  I'd love to see your answers!
