MEC Day Fifteen: Run, Shadowfax. Show us the meaning of haste.

Legolas: That is one of the Mearas, unless my eyes are cheated by some spell.
Gandalf: Shadowfax. He is the lord of all horses and has been my friend through many dangers.

DAY FIFTEEN ~ BEST STEED

I personally think Shadowfax is the best steed in Middle Earth.  He is the chief of the Mearas- a breed of horses who lived as long as Men and who had extraordinary strength and intelligence.  (I think Theoden's horse Snowmane may have been a Meara as well, but I'm not sure.)

My favorite steed in Middle Earth (tying with Shadowfax) is the elven mount Asfaloth.  In the books, he is the horse of the elven warrior Glorfindel.  In the movies, he is Arwen's horse.  In both, he is the horse that carries Frodo to safety across the Ford of Bruinen when he is pursued by the Nazgul.

My second favorite is Brego- a horse that only appears in the movies.  He was Theodred's horse and becomes uncontrollable after his master's death.  Aragorn is able to calm him down, speaing Elvish, and then says, "Turn this fellow loose.  He has seen enough of war."  In gratitude, Brego later rescues Aragorn when he washes ashore after nearly drowning when he fell off a cliff.   He is a gorgeous horse, and Viggo Mortensen formed such a bond with the stallion that played him, that he bought him after the film shoot.  (He also bought the horse that played Asfaloth and gave him to Arwen's stunt double, because she had grown very fond of the horse, but did not have the money to buy him herself.  Is that neat, or what?)

And I simply must mention some of the other awesome horses in The Lord of the Rings: Arod- the horse that was loaned to Legolas by Eomer and upon which he and Gimli rode, Eomer's horse Firefoot, Theoden's Snowmane- Master's Bane, Frodo's pony Strider, and Eowyn's horse Windfola.  Also, Aragorn's Ranger mount Roheryn- who one source says was given to Aragron by Arwen.  And, of course, who could forget Sam's pony Bill?

Yes, there are others, but I'd better stop there.  :D

  1. Okay, I'll admit it. Technically, I cheated for this challenge because I didn't pick a horse. But, if I did... yeah, my post would probably look just like yours. :D

  2. Great minds think alike; I'd have picked Shadowfax, too! I mean, come on--how can you top the chief of the Mearas?

I love the movie-horses story--that was so nice of Viggo Mortensen.

It's too bad more of the horses weren't called by name in the movies--they had such neat names!

    God bless,

For second favorites I would have to pick, from the books, Asfaloth and Bill the pony and from the movies, Asfaloth and Brego.
    Asfaloth:

This was the best pic that I could find and I can't tell if it is from one of the times that they used a real pony or if it is from when they used "two people in a (very good quality) pantomime-style horse costume"
    Brego:

It is funny to see the difference between 'Uraeus' and 'Brego':

And of course there is Snowmane. He is really pretty too.

They are all such great horses and I love that Viggo Mortensen bought 'Asfaloth' for Arwen's stunt double. That was so sweet. And if I ever get to go to Australia I want to go and see 'Brego' and 'Asfaloth'. That would be so cool.
